Story courtesy of Motorpics.

Evolution of a supercar – the reinvented Audi R8


•	R8 V8 Spyder now available in South Africa
•	New flagship model, R8 V10 plus, generating 404 kW
•	New 7-speed S tronic for all variants
•	New LED headlight technology

The R8 is the sporty spearhead of the Audi model line-up. The high-performance sports car is now more dynamic and powerful than ever before thanks to numerous improvements, including a newly developed seven-speed S tronic gearbox. The line-up comprises three different engine variants: the R8 V8, the R8 V10, in both Coupé and Spyder guise; and the new R8 V10 plus, available only in the Coupé.

This iconic model was launched to the South African market in 2007 initially only in V8 Coupé form. The Coupé showed how Audi’s racing technology could be translated into sensational on-road performance. “Then came the Spyder” in 2010, firing emotions with its eye-catching design and offering the ultimate open-top driving experience. Since its introduction, the R8 range has been a resounding success story for Audi in South Africa and has found 255 customers in the local market.

The product update makes the high-performance sports car more attractive than ever with an array of design measures both inside and out combining to inject the Audi R8 with added appeal.

Exterior

Audi showcases the full extent of its capabilities in ultra-lightweight construction with the R8. The complete body is made from an aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) which weighs just 210 kilograms, while the R8 V10 weighs in at 1,570 kilograms. Audi reduced the weight of the new flagship model by roughly 50 kilograms compared to the R8 V10 Coupé on which it is based.

The exterior design has been honed and enhanced even further with the facelifted model.
New details lend its design even more acuity. The single-frame grille with the bevelled upper corners is painted high-gloss black, with horizontal chrome inserts adorning the struts on the V10 variants. The bumper is also new, with the air inlets bearing three crossbars each. The newly structured LED headlights that are standard on all models and the large, round tailpipe trims are the most apparent changes.

The rear lights of all models also include the innovative dynamic turn signals, a new development in LED technology. Generated by LEDs, the indicator light “swipes” in the direction which the driver wants to turn.

The body of the R8 V10 plus features numerous add-on parts made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), including the sideblades on the flanks, the side mirror housings, the enlarged front spoiler and the distinctive diffuser. Carbon fibre is also used in the cabin which is now even more refined.

The updated R8 Spyder gets the same upgrades as the Coupé. The body of the open-top high-performance sports car weighs 216 kilograms. On the Audi R8 Spyder the lid on the soft top compartment and the side parts are also CFRP. The elegant, lightweight fabric top, with its largely aluminium and magnesium linkage, is the crowning touch to the ultra-lightweight design. The top opens and closes electrohydraulically in 19 seconds, and can be operated while driving up to 50 km/h. The heated window pane in the bulkhead between the passenger and engine compartments stands apart from the soft top; the window can be retracted and extended by a switch and also serves as a wind deflector.

Interior

The interior conveys a car racing atmosphere on the luxury level; its dominant feature is the “monoposto” – the long arc curve running around the cockpit in the area of the driver. The flattened rim R8 leather-covered multifunction sports steering wheel bears the new R8 badge, which also appears at the gearshift lever, at the door sill trims, in the instrument cluster and on the start screen of the on-board monitor.

The electrically adjustable sports seats are standard on the V8 and V10 engine versions with bucket seats standard on the V10 plus. The seat upholstery is an Alcantara/leather combination or Fine Nappa; on the R8 Spyder a special pigmentation reduces heating from direct sunlight.

Numerous control and trim elements shine with subdued chrome strips or with black paint; the needles in the instrument cluster and the shift paddles have been slightly modified. The centre console and the handbrake lever are covered with leather, adorned by delicate seams; in the V10 models the moulding around the standard navigation system plus is also leather-covered.

The R8 V10 models come with the MMI Navigation System and the Bang & Olufsen Sound System as standard on-board features.

Engines

The eight-cylinder engine powering the Audi R8 V8 Coupé and Spyder produces 316 kW and 430 Nm of torque. In combination with the seven-speed S tronic, it accelerates the R8 Coupé from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 300 km/h, while the Spyder needs only 0.2 seconds more. The Audi R8 V10 Coupé with the S tronic completes the standard sprint in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 314 km/h, while the Spyder completes the same in just 3.8 seconds. The ten-cylinder engine generates 386 kW and delivers 530 Nm of torque to the crankshaft.

At the top of the Coupé range is the new R8 V10 plus with 404 kW and 540 Nm of torque. Equipped with the S tronic, it catapults from zero to 100 km/h and reaches a top speed of 317 km/h. The R8 V10 plus is not available as a Spyder.

The new seven-speed S tronic significantly boosts the performance of the Audi R8. The fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission features a compact, three-shaft layout and includes a launch control function that provides optimal traction when starting. Drivers can shift the seven-speed S tronic themselves or let it operate in full automatic mode.

All models will be offered in South Africa with S tronic transmission. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h is 0.3 seconds faster than the previous generation R tronic. Fuel consumption decreases by up to 0.9 litres per 100 km, while CO₂ decreases by 21 grams per km.

Local engine line-up:
•	Coupé and Spyder: 4.2 FSI quattro® with 316 kW
•	Coupé and Spyder: 5.2 FSI quattro® with 386 kW
•	Coupé (V10 plus): 5.2 FSI quattro® with 404 kW

Power is delivered to the road via the quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system with a heavy rear-axle bias. The heart of the system is a viscous coupling mounted on the front axle. A mechanical limited slip differential at the rear axle improves the traction.

Chassis

All versions of the R8 feature an axle load distribution of roughly 43:57 – ideal for a mid-engine sports car. Dry sump lubrication enables the engines to be mounted low, giving the vehicle a very low centre of gravity. All of the wheels are mounted on aluminium double wishbones. The setup is tuned for high dynamics, yet delivers good comfort. The adaptive damping system Audi Magnetic Ride (standard in the R8 V10 Coupé) varies the response of the shock absorbers as needed. The chassis of the Audi R8 V10 is decidedly tuned for dynamics.

Standard on all models are 19” wheels, differing in design depending on the model derivative. With an incredibly powerful brake system, all four discs are internally vented and perforated. Standard on the R8 V10 plus are carbon fibre-ceramic brakes, which are even lighter, extremely durable and long-lasting.

Equipment and Pricing

The R8 range is equipped to include a comprehensive level of specification compared to its predecessor.

Audi R8 models include the following items of standard equipment:
•	MMI Navigation Plus
•	Bluetooth
•	19-inch alloy wheels in 5-twin spoke design
•	Full LED headlights
•	LED taillights with “swipe” LED indicators
•	Audi Music Interface

Heading the efficiency charge

Went on an economy run this morning with the Peugeot 208 1.2.Paired with Roger Mccleery, we had to do a run from Lanseria out past Harties, and back past Tarlton. The car is very solid and I enjoyed the economy run as it holds its revs well in 5th gear which helps with economy. There was no cruise control so no cheating.

We did a creditable 4.9 l per 100km, and enjoyed the challenges that were on offer for the day.We didn’t get to test the top end which is stated 180km ,but enjoyed the altogether different challenge of the economy run.The 208 is very driver focused in the cockpit and you feel that everything is at your fingertips.

The worst part of the trip was driving without aircon as Roger insisted that it would affect fuel efficiency. The economy run was stricly controlled, with fuel tanks being sealed etc.Being my first time in one of these, was a little different ,as your natural inclination is to give the car a bit of a workout. It was also my first time in the 208 and I was suitably impressed with the car and can’t wait for the test car to arrive to try out all the features. From my short run it definitely seems like a contender in this segment.

Peugeot South Africa’s new vehicle sales in 2013 continue to sparkle – and the demand for the latest-generation 208 subcompact hatchback is one of the key factors.

One of the first new-generation B-segment hatchbacks to reach SA, the 208 – on offer in 1.2 and 1.6-litre variants – has rapidly established a reputation for frugal running costs, strong dynamic traits and tactile quality

Its ongoing and increasing success coincides with growing demand for more compact, more economical cars still providing high levels of sophistication and a satisfying array of standard features. That trend has been a core contributor to the 208’s local and global market acceptance.

Peugeot has always been a strong player in the B-segment, and comparing an older-generation subcompact hatch such as the 206 to the current 208 provides some compelling insights as far as the development of compact car technology and sophistication are concerned.

The 206 made its SA debut in 2000 at a time when Peugeot’s presence locally was still under the stewardship of retail group McCarthy Motors. Engine options included both eight-valve and 16-valve versions of a 1,4-litre petrol engine, as well as a 1,6-litre unit.

The base-model eight-valve engine was credited with 55 kW of maximum power at 5 500 r/min, linked to a 111 Nm torque peak at 2 800 r/min. Combined with front-wheel drive and a five-speed gearbox, the 206 1.4 managed a 13.2 sec time for the 0-100 km/h sprint, and a 173 km/h top speed – admirable figures at the time.

Even back then, fuel consumption was an important statistic, with the 206 1.4 8V achieving a combined-cycle figure of 6.1 litres/100 km – an impressive statistic at the time. CO2 emissions ratings were not considered a factor way back then, though!

Two generations later, the entry-level 208 is powered by a smaller but highly advanced and efficient 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. Featuring variable valve timing and four valves per cylinder, the high-tech unit achieves a maximum power output of 60 kW at 5 750 r/min, together with a torque peak of 118 Nm at 2 750 r/min.

With its aluminium alloy cylinder block and cylinder head – the latter featuring an integrated exhaust manifold – the new engine is 21 kg lighter than four-cylinder engine with comparable outputs.

Notably in the current context, the new engine is significantly more fuel efficient, with a combined-cycle consumption figure of just 4,5 litres/100 km, dropping to as low as 3,9 litres/100 km during open-road cruising.

Compared to the larger-engined 206, the 208 1.2 VTi is also dynamically superior. It achieves a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 12,2 sec, while top speed is 175 km/h.

Comparing the 206 model’s 1,6-itre engine to the 208’s new-generation powerplant shows similar efficiency and performance games. Back then, the 206’s 1 587 cc unit was credited with 80 kW and 147 Nm. The current 208’s 1 598 cc four-cylinder achieves power and torque outputs of 88 kW and 160 Nm.

Vitally, the 206 power plant had a rated combined-cycle consumption figure of 6,4 litres/100 km, compared to the significantly more frugal 5,8 litres/100 km of the latest 208 1,6-litre engine. The CO2 emissions rating is an equally impressive 134 g/km. And in performance terms, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time has been trimmed from the 206’s 10,6 sec to 9,9 sec for the 208.

The comparison is a compelling illustration of just how much progress has been achieved in the subcompact hatchback context. But the improvements stretch beyond the use of high-tech engines.

The 208’s focus on efficiency extends to the use of lightweight, high-tech materials in body and suspension construction, optimising airflow to achieve improved aerodynamics and enhancing standard active and passive safety features well beyond the levels set by the 206 at the time.

The ever-increasing expectations of a progressively sophisticated and demanding customer base has also seen a substantial upgrade in standard equipment, features and materials. The 208 1.2 Active, for instance, offers features such as a touch-screen display, Bluetooth streaming and telephony, USB connectivity, remote central locking, and multimedia capabilities that were unheard of in this segment only a few years ago.

For all its technology and sophistication, the new Peugeot 208 still has to live up to the expectations of customers as far as value for money is concerned. While full maintenance plans were considered the preserve of premium-segment models, Peugeot SA has been one of the pioneers in bringing the peace of mind and value benefits of included full maintenance to the subcompact segment.

The Peugeot Premium Plan is a five-year full maintenance offering on all new Peugeot models, including the 208, that not only underscores the brand’s commitment to SA owners of its products, but also offers buyers additional value and ownership peace of mind.

A revamped dealer network has played a further, important role in the substantial improvement of customer satisfaction levels, while also attracting new local investment, with the opening of new dealerships in Nelspruit and Cape Town.

“The latest 208 range, including our highly efficient 1.2 VTi models, is not only proof of the constant evolution of technology to the benefit of the customer, but also epitomises the current state of the art in the ultra-competitive B-segment,” says Francis Harnie, managing director of Peugeot South Africa.

“The improved efficiencies, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions achieved by the 208 not only reduce running costs significantly, but also benefit the environment, which is an increasingly important factor among eco-responsible car buyers.

That we are also able to extend the advantages of our five-year, full-maintenance Premium plan to include our 208 subcompact range ensures a particularly compelling buying proposition,” Harnie concluded.

AURIS HSD – THE NEW STANDARD FOR GREEN MOTORING

From the iconic Prius to the super-frugal Yaris HSD, Toyota with its burgeoning range of hybrids, is changing the way people drive. However, a nagging myth that persists around environmentally-friendly vehicles is their power or rather, perceived lack of it. Toyota has ‘tuned’ into this and thanks to advanced electronic mechanisms which intelligently strike the ideal balance between performance and efficiency according to the driver’s needs, has answered this concern.

I recently had the Auris HSD on test and I am an obvious fan of Toyota’s Yaris HSD and now the Auris as well. The Auris is a step up and I enjoyed the more sturdy, more solid drive of the Auris. The car was very frugal as to be expected, and even when some haste was needed and the foot was put down ,it did not really affect the overall fuel efficiency that much.

I like the silent drive which a lot of people don’t as they prefer a throaty roar.According to Toyota the battery should last the life of the car which allays that concern for most motorists. If I had a choice between the three models which I drove namely:Prius,Auris and Yaris..for me it would have to be the Auris HSD.

But as Kerry Roodt, General Manager of Marketing Communications, points out, it delivers so much more: “The Auris HSD entrenches Toyota’s position as the standard for green motoring by offering a level of refinement, practicality, performance and affordability that rivals conventional petrol and diesel cars. It also thrusts the newcomer into the forefront as a mainstream proposition, accessible to the largest possible audience.”

Hybrid-specific Exterior Design

The Auris Hybrid shares the same dynamic exterior styling and extensive interior re-modelling introduced with the new Auris. However, hybrid models (in mid XS trim and high-grade XR guise) go a little further by incorporating unique detailing to identify them as the flagships of the model range.

For instance, the lower grille and lower rear bumper diffuser are finished in a hybrid-exclusive graphite metallic paint colour, and the Toyota bonnet and tailgate logos are in hybrid blue. There are hybrid logos on the front wings and a hybrid mark on the tailgate. The rear combination lamps incorporate hybrid-only LED lights.

Both 15” silver (XS) and 17” graphite (XR) alloy wheels are of a new design unique to the Auris Hybrid.

Hybrid-specific Interior Design

It goes without saying that Auris Hybrid models benefit from the same all-new interior design with more space, greater comfort and improved sensory quality including extensive use of soft-touch materials and leather for improved tactility.

A repackaging of the battery pack under the rear seat means that luggage capacity is now equivalent to that of other models in the range (a class-leading 360 litres).

The Auris Hybrid has an exclusive meter and Eco Drive Support monitor design within the driver’s instrument binnacle, a hybrid blue shift-by-wire gear lever and hybrid-exclusive instrument panel ornamentation.

XS grade versions feature premium quality cloth trim and a hybrid blue brushed aluminium instrument panel finish, whilst high grade XR models boast Ice Grey leather dashboard inserts accompanied by leather upholstery.

Improved Driving Dynamics

Here’s a summary of some of the chassis revisions that have contributed to its new-found handling prowess:

•	Lighter, more rigid bodyshell and lower centre of gravity for improved handling and ride comfort
•	Revised suspension for enhanced comfort and improved stability (even bigger news for the HSD derivatives)
•	Improved electric power steering system for more engaging driver feedback, response and driving pleasure
•	Enhanced NVH measures to reduce both engine and road noise

Full Hybrid System Performance

One thing hybrids can do is produce generous amounts of horsepower. To contextualise the new Auris HSD’s powertrain, think of the electric motor as an energy-boosting addition to the petrol engine – alone the electric motor generates torque of 207 Nm; this is supplemental to the 142 Nm generated by the petrol engine at 4000 rpm.

Capable of operating both independently and in combination, the HSD system’s 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum power output of 100 kW, equipping the Auris Hybrid with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

Thanks to the improved aerodynamic performance and lighter weight of this next generation model the Auris Hybrid’s remarkably low CO2 emissions have improved by 2 g/km to 87 g/km (with 15” wheels). In addition, the Auris Hybrid generates virtually no NOx and particulate matter emissions.

Moreover, when operating in the unique, switchable pure electric vehicle (EV) mode not available to mild hybrid vehicles, the Auris Hybrid generates zero CO2, NOx and particulate emissions, driving for up to two kilometres continuously at speeds of up to about 50 km/h, dependant on battery charge and driving conditions.

Improved Hybrid Synergy Drive – An Even More Compelling Proposition

The control logic of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system’s seamless, planetary gear (CVT) transmission has been modified to give a smoother, more natural feeling to vehicle acceleration, with a closer relationship between vehicle speed and engine revs.

Advanced engine technologies include a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, an electric water pump, the elimination of the auxiliary drive belt, a reduction in piston ring tensional force and the optimisation of oil pump capacity.

When used in combined with a cooled EGR system, the Atkinson cycle engine offers significant gains in fuel efficiency and the reduction of emissions.

With the repackaging of the battery pack under the rear seat, the cooling air intake is relocated from the side of the seats to the seat undercover area. This relocation allows for a lower intake air temperature, enhancing battery cooling and, hence, efficiency. Not forgetting, of course, that now boot space is exactly the same as petrol versions.

Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA)

Fitted as standard on both XS and XR variants, the new Auris HSD features Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA); an Easy Set function making it easier and significantly quicker to use.

The system uses ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear side-bumpers to identify viable parallel parking spaces. It will then automatically apply the correct sequence of steering angles for the parking manoeuvre into the target space without any steering input from the driver; all the driver needs do is control the vehicle’s speed.

Enhanced Hybrid Equipment Specification

In keeping with the Hybrid’s elevated status in the model range, even the XS model is stacked in the kit department. As mentioned, externally, both the XS and XR grades get a hybrid-specific front spoiler, daytime running light system as well as front fog lights. XR models are further enhanced by the panorama glass roof (with electric sun cover), rear side window privacy glass and 17” graphite alloys.

Hybrid-specific interior décor includes automatic air conditioning, display touch-screen audio with Bluetooth, multi-information display with unique hybrid instrumentation featuring blue backlighting, reverse camera, steering switches, leather steering wheel, Smart Entry, electrochromatic rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers and a special metallic finish dashboard insert for XS models.

A True Value Proposition

-	Auris HSD XS: R297 900 (incl. VAT)
-	Auris HSD VR: R323 100 (incl. VAT)

. The new Auris Hybrid benefits from a three year/100,000km warranty, extended to eight years/195,000km on hybrid system components, including the battery. As with other Auris models, the new HSD range comes with a standard five-year/ 90 000 km service plan. The new models are also supported by the ToyotaCare Roadside Assistance Programme which entitles customers to 24-hour roadside assistance, ensuring ultimate peace-of-mind motoring.

Release courtesy of Peugeot South Africa.

Sébastien Loeb has had his first opportunity to sample the 208 T16 Pikes Peak he is poised to drive in Colorado on June 30. The nine-time world Release courtesy of Peugeot South Africa.
rally champion believes he has the ultimate machine to help him win the famous Race to the Clouds. The next step will be to fully tame the 875hp beast…

When Sébastien Loeb’s helicopter landed alongside the high-security track at La Ferté-Vidame, in northwestern France, the rally star believed he was in for a routine test session. After just a handful of laps in the car, he realised that this was something different, however… “The 208 T16 Pikes Peak is a rocket! It’s so powerful! The first time you drive it, each gear change practically stuns you. The shifts are really brutal, and it takes a little time to anticipate the sudden jarring. You get used to it, but it was quite disorienting to begin with.”

The Frenchman may have seen it all on world rallying’s most challenging stages, but his words were far from blasé after his first taste of the 208 T16 Pikes Peak. “I’ve never driven anything that accelerates so fast!” he remarked. “In the lower gears, a Formula 1 car doesn’t deliver maximum power. With the Peugeot, though, it’s bang, bang, bang as you move up the box from standstill. Thanks to its four-wheel drive transmission and turbocharged engine, its pull-away performance is phenomenal! You find yourself in sixth gear at 240kph in no time at all!” Indeed, with a 0-100kph time of 1.8s, the 208 T16 Pikes Peak would leave any F1 car standing…

It is not only the gearbox which made a big impression on rallying’s superstar. “Thanks to its aerodynamic downforce and wide tyres, its braking is amazing, too.” he exclaimed. “In fact, the 208 package is a combination of the best of several worlds: it’s got the downforce of a Formula 1 car, the wide tyres of an endurance racing prototype and a differential, like a WRC car…” In short, it’s a cocktail that gives you wings…

As the familiarisation process continued, Sébastien Loeb was clearly won over by the unique experience: “I have driven many types of car in my career, but this is very, very different. Its acceleration performance and stopping power are more like those of a Formula 1 single-seater than a rally car. Its handling is fantastic as well; there’s so much grip, and the all-wheel drive transmission makes it very stable. It’s got huge potential.”
Like any thoroughbred, however, the 208 T16 Pikes Peak will need to be broken in, since Sébastien Loeb has no intention of allowing the car to be the one in control. On the contrary! With nine world rally titles to his name, he approaches the mission with his trademark calm, however: “This track isn’t very wide and there aren’t any run-offs, so I’m taking things one step at a time. I don’t know what the car’s limits are yet but it was important to do this run on a circuit today. Now we have a better idea of where we stand and a better overview of the car’s potential. After that, the challenge will be to try to feel totally at one with the car on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb itself. That will take some work…”

When the big day comes to race to the Colorado summit at an altitude of 4,301 metres, Sébastien Loeb will need to be capable of mastering every buck and kick of the thoroughbred if he is to steer clear of the many pitfalls that await him along the giddy 20-kilometre course. And that will require perfect osmosis between the French champion and his extremely powerful steed.

To give this fusion every chance of happening, Peugeot Sport has scheduled a busy test programme at circuits, on roads and at altitude as the next phase of this extraordinary project which the multiple world rally championship finds particularly stimulating: “I really can’t wait to get to drive the 208 T16 Pikes Peak in Colorado!” A little patience, Sébastien. There are now less than two months to go…Watch this space!

New Opel Meriva’s Impressive Looks Matched By Dynamic Driving Experience

•	Wide track and latest technology suspension provide excellent driving dynamics
•	Electro-hydraulic power steering provides positive feel and precision in steering
•	Large brakes and sophisticated ESC functions provide enhanced active safety
The Opel Meriva was driven on test this past week and to me it delivered a lovely drive around town.I drove it mostly in the city and it was responsive, zippy and easy to negotiate the traffic in the sprawling Jozi. The 1.4 Turbo engine gives just the right amount of power to get you from A to B in the most efficient time.

It sits up high so you have good visibility, but is not unstable as a result of that. The reverse opening door adds another little quirky dimension to this awesome little hatch, and I reckon it works a charm.

It comes standard with the following equipment:
•	Automatic Headlamp Levelling
•	Panoramic Roof
•	Leather Steering Wheel
•	Alloy Wheels
•	Climate Control
•	Rain Sensor Wipers
•	Partial Leather Seats
•	Up to 32 Storage Possibilities
The new Opel Meriva is both longer and wider than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 15mm while the front and rear tracks are increased by 39mm and 45mm respectively.

The engineering team for the new Meriva has completely redesigned the suspension and steering for this latest model. Every component, down to the last nut and bolt has been revised in the quest for optimised dynamic performance and ride refinement to match the visual appeal of the vehicle.

On the front McPherson strut suspension the paths of the spring and damper have been separated and individually optimised for improved steering response and ride comfort. The springs are also designed to resist side loadings resulting in reduced friction in the movement of the damper.

New Electro-hydraulic power steering system for improved precision and feel

The previous generation Meriva made use of an all electric power steering setup to reduce steering effort. The latest generation model makes use of an electro-hydraulic system that is better suited to the larger size of the new model as well as the fundamental changes to the suspension design.

Neutral Torque Axis engine mounts inhibit engine vibration

The new Opel Meriva makes use of latest technology Neutral Torque Axis (NTA) engine mountings first seen in the Opel Corsa. These separate the loads induced by the engine from the weight of the engine and the torque movement of the engine under power.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard on both the Enjoy and Cosmo variants. The ESC is tuned to act progressively and avoid any sudden or early interventions. The system is programmed to execute whatever actions will most effectively counter the onset of any lack of vehicle control. This can involve braking of one, two, three or all four wheels at once or, if necessary, a gentle attenuation of the electronic throttle.

Traction Control. A traction control function is included in the ESC programme. Also controlled by the ESC software is Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EDB) which ensures that an optimum braking force is applied at both the front and rear of the vehicle simultaneously for maximum stability under heavy braking. EBD is supplemented by the Brake Assist System (BAS). This assists the driver in emergency braking situations by ensuring a higher level of deceleration than possible through the normal brake booster system. Even unskilled drivers can achieve very short braking distances with the assistance of this function.

Also included in the ESC package is Electronic Drag Torque Control (EDC). This function prevents the Meriva from becoming unstable due to the effect of engine braking if the driver suddenly lifts off the accelerator or engages a gear that is too low. If any onset of slip on the driven wheels is detected engine torque will be increased until the wheels are rotating at a rate that negates any slip.

Other features included in the electronic driver aids suite are Straight Line Stability (SLS) and Corner Stability Control (CSC). These systems are activated if the car is braking while cornering or travelling straight ahead with the brakes applied on a road surface with differing friction levels.

Together the significant array of active and passive safety features incorporated in the new Opel Meriva provide for an exceptional driving experience with excellent vehicle dynamics in all conditions.

Opel Meriva offers a 5 year /120 000km extended warranty

Hail to Toyota engineers who have been taken with a new spirit under the watchful tutelage of the company’s charismatic President and Chief Executive,Akio Toyota. The result being the sleeker, bolder and much more confident all new Toyota Auris. This c-segment mid range hatch has a look about it that you know is going to get people into dealerships to drive it and purchase it.

The Exterior Look

Fresh from the fantastic success story of the 86 sports car which has a waiting list as long as your arm,the engineers have decided to make some dramatic changes to the Auris .It has a lower centre of gravity making it sit lower and the car just looks sharper and more distinctive.
The vehicle feels light on its ‘’feet’’and generally feels far more nimble and responsive thanks to tweaks to the suspension and electric power steering. My drive felt zippy and when I needed some oomph to pass slower traffic it was effortless. The Auris is a looker and you definitely feel noticed as the new Ad campaign alludes to,and I got a lot of stares and thumbs up along the way driving it to the Vaal River.

At 4,275mm the overall length of the Auris has increased by only 30mm and its wheelbase remains the same at 2,600mm,making it one of the most compact cars in its class.Reduced by 55mm,the overall height of 1,460mm makes the newAuris one of the lowest cars in the c-segment.It has also been made 50kg lighter on average by using high tensile steel in the body construction

Two styling traits worthy of mention are the ‘’Under Priority’’grille design and the ‘’Keen Look’’eyebrow-shaped headlamps.Beneath a low sweeping bonnet line dominated by a new, larger Toyota badge which is set lower than its predecessor, the upper grille features a central,chrome-plated horizontal trim bar which is visually extended into the headlamp clusters to accentuate the width of the vehicle.

The profile is stronger as well, with a steeply-raked windscreen and extension of the side glazing further towards the rear.A pronounced rising belt line punctuates the flanks. To the rear ,a wider opening tailgate features powerful, convex and concave surfacing. It is topped by an integral roof spoiler and flanked by a new ,wraparound rear combination lamp design which reinforces the shape of both the rear wing and rear screen,as well as the added strength over the rear wheel arch. This makes it a very pleasant experience following the Auris as it looks very nifty from behind.

Numerous components of the front MacPherson strut suspension have been revised which overall leads to a far more comfortable ride.To be consistent the ,the power steering had to be adapted to the improved performance of the platform.Extensive improvements to the new Auris NVH measures ensure that the car not only offers a more comfortable ride ,but is noticeable quieter as well.Extensive soundproofing within the engine bay, front wheel arches and dashboard has reduced noise levels in the engine and cabin.

Safety
The new Auris maintains Tyota’s high standards in active and passive safety, with the aim of achieving a five-star 2013 Euro Ncap crash test rating. All models across the Auris range are equipped with ABS,EBD and Brake Assist. In addition, all models are fitted with driver, front passenger and side airbags.XR models get curtain shield airbags as well as a drivers kneebag.

Interior
The interior was a pleasant surprise and has a much softer look with far less plasticky feel in the cockpit area. The air vents, audio panel, transmission tunnel and steering wheel are trimmed with a sliver paint finish. On higher grades, the dashboard itself is finished in genuine leather with baseball stitching.
The instrument panel upper surface and door trim shoulder areas are finished in soft touch materials, and the cockpit pillars are trimmed with fabric. The gearsfift knob is of a new design and the steering wheel is clad in the highest quality nappa leather with single baseball stitching.

The seat height has been reduced by 40mm and the steering wheel tilt angle lowered by two degress creating a more engaging driving position. This gives the seats excellent comfort as well.A newly developed sports seat offering an even higher level of lateral support thanks to ultra-padded side bolsters is standard on XS and XR grades.
The new front seat design increases rear seat knee room by 20 mm,and the rear door opening width has been enlarged. The loadspace length has been increased by 50mm and the tailgate opening width increased by 90mm.Featuring the added flexibility of of a dual-level loadspace and 60;40 split –folding rear seats, the Auris offers an increased luggage capacity of 360-litres-up from 283 litres on the previous model.
The interior storage features include a glove box, sunglass holder, coat hooks, coin box, four cup and bottle holders respectively and a sliding centre arm rest console.Three 12-volt accessory sockets and an AUX external input plug are also present.

The entry-level 1.3 X and 1.6Xi models are generously spect and come standard with body-coloured door handles and mirrors, remote central locking,aircon,four- speaker audio system with CD player, steering switches,USB/iPod connection, front and rear electric windows and electric mirrors to mention a few.The 1.3 has 15’’ steel wheels(aero wheel caps)and the 1.6Xi is equipped with 16’’ alloys.
Up a grade to the 1.6XS mid-grade version and additional features include display audio, back monitor with camera, six speakers, front sport seats, fog lamps and Bluetooth.

The flagship XR grade has full leather upholstery, automatic climate control, cruise control, front seat heaters, lumbar support, auto lights, electrochmatic rear-view mirror,keyless-entry and Push Start top up as standard kit.
The Auris is available in six colours including two awesome new colours called Avant –garde Bronze Metallic and a vibrant orange -Inferno Metallic .

Under the Bonnet.

The powertrain line-up plays a key role in defining the new Auris sportier look.Firstly ,the reduction of powertrain weight through the use of super-lightweight and highly compact engine components and transmission components throughout the new Auris engine range.
Secondly the minimisation of mechanical losses through the adoption of Valvematic-a further development of VVT-i in the 1.6 petrol engine ,new roller rocker technology and smaller, lighter pistons in both petrol engines, low viscosity oil and 6-speed manual transmissions throughout the range.

Thirdly, the maximisation of combustion efficiency. This has been achieved within the new Auris petrol engine range through the use of high 11.5.1 compression ratios,	Valvematic ,the refinement of intake port and combustion chamber design, and piston cooling by oil jet.
1.33-litre Dual VVT-i Petrol Engine.
The entry level in the Auris range is the 1.3 petrol engine that generates 73KW and a maximum torque of 128Nm at 3,800 rpm. This dynamic performance is backed up by fuel consumption of 5.8l/100km and CO-two emissions of 134g/km,a 3% improvement on earlier models.

1.6-litre Valvematic Petrol Engine.
Available with either a six-speed manual box or Multidrive S CVT unit, the 1.6 litre Valvematic engine punches out 97Kw and a maximum torque of 160 Nm at only 4,400 rpm.
This coupled with a fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100 km and CO –two emissions of only 145g/ km result in a reduction of 11% and 14% respectively.
Multidrive S Continuously –Variable Transmission
Newly available on the 1.6 Valvematic petrol version is the Multidrive S continuously –variable transmission (CVT) with afully automatic seamless shift mode or a sequential stepped 7-speed Sport mode.In Automatic mode the system is optimised for quietness and fuel economy. In Sport mode-the system is optimised for response and direct engine control.
What it Costs.
With a starting price of under R200 000,the new Auris will make a big impact on the hotly contested C segment. To quote Glenn Crompton-,Vice President of Marketing,’’the lavish levels of equipment coupled with the dynamic sophistication and afoordable price point mean that Toyota’s flagship hatch will certainly make it onto any savvy consumers shopping list.I have to say-I concur with his comments,it is a really exciting all round vehicle.
1.3 X-R195 000(incl Vat)
1.6 Xi-R217 500
1.6 XS-R228 600
1.6 XR-R253 200
1.6 XR-R265 600
The new Auris comes with a a three-year/90 00km service plan. The new models are also supported by the ToyotaCare Roadside Assistance Programme which entitles customers to 24-hour roadside assistance, ensuring peace of mind motoring.

This week on test is the Lexus GS 350,the luxury sedan from Toyota. This car is a smooth powerful specimen. It is an absolute joy to drive as it delivers the feeling of luxury from when you push the start button to that adrelin pumping feeling when you put your foot down hard on the accelerator. It is extremely driver focused with its dynamic cockpit, but offers up comfort and enjoyment to the passengers as well.

The media screen gives a host of info about your trip and consumption is easily tracked.Consumption around town is not exactly frugal but you can try your level best to drive sedately if you so please.I didn’t and I got around 14l per 100l.The car has all sorts of luxury items, but what I enjoyed was the rear camera which made reversing in tight corners a cinch.

Room in the boot was also cavernous and you would have no problems packing for a holiday. It has an automatic gear transmission which is mooth as silk and gives you no problems.I had to pick up my daughter from the Justin Bieber concert at soccer city in nightmare traffic and it was a breeze having that transmission.
It has effortless power and you basically feel pretty much near the top of the food chain in day to day traffic. It sails past most cars in a flash, and your only enemy is the speed camera.I would buy this car in a flash and it was a most enjoyable test.

This most dramatic and anticipated of new Lexus models combines an attractive, distinctive appearance with sporting performance and a high level of standard equipment.
The Lexus GS 350 is more than just a luxury car. It brings a more engaging driving experience, bolder design and a more spacious, contemporary interior, heralding a new chapter in the history of Lexus.
-	GS350 EX, with 233 kW/378 Nm 3456 cm³ V6 petrol engine (code (2GR-FSE) and 6-speed autobox, visually identical to the GS 250 and with the same equipment grade.

Viewed from the front, the Spindle Grille with its trapezoidal contours – set to be a signature feature on all future Lexus models – integrates into the aggressive front bumper to allow for efficient aerodynamics. It sets the scene for the sporty overtones of this new luxury sedan. As a distinctive Lexus design feature, combined with the deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), the grille expresses the GS’s confident and dynamic character. As complement, the headlamps with its projector beam design add a strong, chiselled appearance – not to mention excellent illumination.
The chassis and suspension – agility is key

In developing the new GS 350, the Lexus team of engineers strived to create an “emotionally intriguing driving experience”. This philosophy was central to the development of all aspects of the new GS 350.
The GS’s new platform is more rigid. The wider track – by 40 mm at the front and 50 mm at the rear – works in combination with a revised suspension design to help ensure a more solid stance and superior cornering performance.

The use of front and rear aluminium control arms helps reduce unsprung weight and results in significant improvements in agility, roll damping, ride comfort, body control and steering precision. Overall, the suspension is lighter and stronger, allowing it to react to driver input readily, and ride quietly without harshness.
The F-Sport suspension ensures even more agility. Ventilated disc brakes featuring four-piston aluminium front callipers boast the latest electronic enhancements to help provide braking balance and control.
The GS 350 and feature as standard 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 235/45 tyres.
Safety and security features

Compared to the previous-generation Lexus GS, significant advances have been made in both passive and active safety systems as standard equipment.
The GS 350 IS equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger. Outboard rear seats have seat-mounted side airbags .
New Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats reduce the space between the occupant’s head and headrest to help limit excessive head movement and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of rear end collisions.

Exterior design – all about dynamics
From the front to the rear, the new Lexus GS 350 is all-new and fuses distinctive style with engineering functionality. The striking Spindle Grille design language gives it an instantly recognisable identity on the road.
From the side, the GS 350 projects the image of a spacious performance sedan with a road-hugging stance. The tapered lower door sills and the short front overhang give the GS a sense of motion, while width-enhancing wheel arches add an athletic stance, hinting at its dynamic abilities.

Interior design – driver focused
Lexus engineers challenged themselves to develop a more spacious interior environment for the new GS. Leaving exterior dimensions virtually unchanged, they increased cabin and boot space to create a richly appointed interior to transport passengers and their luggage in comfort.
Painstaking attention to detail has been applied to the GS cabin to create a balance of luxury, technological amenity and emotional design. Focused around the driver and the driving experience, it provides more space for all occupants, increasing the comfort of both front and rear passengers.
The new layout of the long, sculpted dash gives the driver and front passenger a sense of roominess through its clean centre stack and large, high-resolution display screen. Most of the comfort and convenience controls such as audio and climate are relocated to provide a cleaner and more sophisticated dash layout.
Revised door openings offer easier entry and exit all round. Boot access is improved with a wider, deeper opening. Luggage capacity has been increased by almost 25 per cent to easily accommodate four golf bags.
A standard reversing camera adds security and convenience.

A new analogue clock with LED indicators, carved from a single ingot of aluminium for a smooth consistent look, adds a unique retro-modern touch to the centre of the dash. The clock illuminates when the vehicle is unlocked, welcoming driver and passengers into the classy cabin.
Central to the driver interface is the world’s first 12.3-inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display screen, the focal point of the GS interior. This impressive display screen is augmented by a new generation multimedia interface system with many improvements over the previous version.

It combines with a second-generation Remote Touch Interface, which has been redesigned and enhanced to increase ease of use. The new system features a slide-type control. The Enter-command, previously performed by the two Enter buttons mounted on the side, is now performed by clicking down on the haptic device, similar to a conventional computer mouse and thus more intuitive to use.

The Drive Mode Select control, which falls easily to hand next to the gear shift lever, allows the driver to choose between three different dynamic modes depending on the driving conditions and the driver’s mood. ECO, NORMAL and SPORT modes are available on all models, while SPORT+ mode is available on the GS 450h F-Sport only to activate the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and allow tailoring of the engine, gearbox and suspension settings.
Standard equipment

Apart from the comprehensive list of safety equipment, the new GS 350 leaves no stone unturned to provide its driver and passengers with the last word in luxury, comfort and refinement.
The GS 350 – comes with the following as standard:
-	HID (High Intensity Discharge) auto headlights with auto levelling and washers
-	DRLs (Daytime Running Lights)
-	Front fog lights
-	Retractable and heated side mirrors
-	Rain sensing intermittent wipers
-	Leather interior with piano black trim detail
-	Seat Heating and Ventilation System for driver and passenger with 10-way electric adjustment and two-way lumbar support adjustment
-	Smart entry and start system (driver, passenger and boot)
-	Tilt/telescopic leather steering wheel with multifunction controls
-	12-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System with MP3/USB/iPod integration
-	EMV display with HDD navigation with traffic data and voice command
-	Drive Mode Select (Eco, Normal and Sport)
-	Reverse camera and guidance monitor
-	Park Distance Control
-	Dual-zone automatic air conditioning with pollen filter
-	Bluetooth with voice command
-	Cruise control
-	Electro-chromatic rear view mirror
Judged purely on the merits of the standard specification included in every new GS model, there is no denying the fact that Lexus has surpassed its own high standards it has previous set in this class.
The GS 350 is powered by an advanced 3.5-liter V6 engine with four cams and four valves per cylinder, and with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). With 233 kW on tap and with an Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i), it is one of the most powerful engines in the segment as well as the only one with both port and direct injection.
The GS 350 comes with a six-speed sequential-shift automatic gearbox with paddle shifters and Drive Mode selector to select sporting functions for enhanced driving pleasure.

Lexus GS pricing
GS 350 R584 900.00

THE NEW RENAULT CLIO 4: IT’S LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

The New Renault Clio 4 returns as a segment benchmark with an all-in-one, affordable, value for money package that stands out from the crowd

At the recent press conference Sumumi Uchikoshi MD of Renault SA said you needed ‘’quote three factors for success namely:Well prepared,Good relationship with customers and lastly Surprise..’’unquote.Well driving the all new Clio 4 through the foothills of the Magaliesberg,I was pleasantly surprised. When you hear that the car you are about to review has a 900 cc engine albeit a turbo, you do have a few doubts creeping around the old cranial cavity.

Generation on generation, Clio has been celebrated as one of Renault’s quintessential top-selling cars with sales in excess of 12-million notched up since Clio I débuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1990. One year after its launch Clio I clinched the 1991 European Car of the Year title taking pole position again with Clio 3 in 2006. In South Africa, Clio 2 was awarded Car of the Year in 2000 with Clio 3, a Car of the Year finalist in 2006 and 2007.

The drive was in fact extremely pleasant, and delivered in terms of ticking most boxes on the plus side.It is a sexy looking car and I was thrown a number of admiring glances on the drive by fellow motorists. This because of its sporty color scheme as well as its new improved styled lines that are sleek and sensuous all at the same time.

“The all-new Renault Clio 4 is in a class of its own,” says Fabien Payzan, Vice-President of Marketing at Renault South Africa. “Its seductive styling, all-new engine, smart and useful on-board technologies and much more, will position it streets ahead of its peers in the small car segment. “We are anticipating a stampede by Clio aficionados, many of whom have delayed their new buying decisions until they have had sight of the much-awaited New Clio,” he adds.

Consistently ahead of its class rivals in terms of innovation since inception, Clio is renowned for its inclusion of technologies usually reserved for cars in upper segments. It was the first car in its category to obtain a four star, then a five star, Euro NCAP rating.

Today, Renault has capitalised on the model’s hallmark strengths and everyday versatility to deliver the New Clio which seeks to win over customers thanks to its attractive blend of emotion, solid core strengths and some serious street cred.

Renault South Africa’s aim is to re-establish New Clio’s position within the B-segment and compete actively within and as part of the Top 5 segment performers. This will mean it needs to move up ten places from where the car currently sits in the segment, and based on what we saw and drove,it has a good chance of doing just that.

NEW CLIO MAKES ITS MARQUE

“Cars are not just for getting us around, they can also inspire dreams and desires”, says Laurens van den Acker, Renault Design Director. “From initial concept through to production, the sensual lines of New Clio have been focused on total seduction. It is so gorgeous that it makes you want to eat it.”

Wayne van der Merwe, Senior Product Manager at Renault South Africa concurs, describing New Clio as “a car that you want to get up close to and personal with.”

.

Front-end styling featuring a Renault logo more prominent than previously set bold and upright on the radiator grille against a gloss black background makes New Clio’s sleek, sporty silhouette instantly recognisable. Styling made more distinctive still by headlight units boasting chrome detail and LED daytime running lights which are standard across the range. While the exterior styling suggests coupé, all three variants have five doors with the rear door handles concealed close to the rear quarter lights.

Achieving balanced proportions was a priority throughout the design process and the ratio of wheel-size to vehicle-height has been fine-tuned to afford a more dynamic look. New Clio stands 1 448mm high, is 4 062mm in length, 1 732mm wide (excluding mirrors) and sits 45mm closer to the ground than its predecessor.

A steeply raked windscreen adds to its dynamic look and feel as does the improved one-third glass to two-thirds body ratio when New Clio is seen from the side. The lower ride-height gives it an assertive stance and is indicative of a strong personality. Its large-diameter wheels pushed 15mm outwards compared to previously, fill and finish flush with the wheel arches while pronounced but proportionate shoulder lines gives the newcomer substantial presence.

SMART TECHNOLOGY: MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER

New Clio, like its predecessor, responds to market demands and sets new standards for generous onboard technology usually associated with larger cars. “Smart technology is evident at every turn while equipment levels for a car in its class are nothing short of astonishing,” says Van der Merwe.

All practical and easy-to-use, a host of up-to-the-minute multimedia bells and whistles, standard smart features include:
	Cruise control with speed limiter
	Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming
	Hands-free telephony
	USB connectivity
	Onboard computer
	The new Bass Reflex sound system
	Motorway touch indicators
	Renault keycard
	Hill Start Assist

“The upper versions of New Clio are the first and only cars in their segment to offer navigation as standard.

PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY: THE NEW 66KW TURBO PETROL ENGINE

“With the market shift towards engine downsizing for economy and ecological reasons alike, Renault’s development of its Energy engine range has addressed this trend and New Clio breaks ground with its introduction of the 66kW Turbo engine with Stop Start technology,” says Yorick Duchaussoy, Project Leader for the Powertrain Division at Renault Global.

“The Renault Turbo Control Efficiency engine line-up is a direct result of Renault’s technology transfer capabilities and prowess, and is fuelled by the new-generation trend towards engine downsizing. Down in size does not mean down in power.”

Renault’s first turbo-charged, 3-cylinder petrol engine, the all-aluminium 66kW Turbo boasts performance equivalent to that of a normally-aspirated 1.4 litre 4-cylinder engine offering the best balance between driving enjoyment and fuel consumption efficiency in its category.
The new 66kW Turbo engine boasts amazing power and torque for a low capacity engine with unparalleled flexibility, agility and high drivability.

	A very low inertia turbo for quick response at low engine revs: 135Nm at 2 500rpm (90 percent of this figure available from 1 650rpm to ensure good pick-up, acceleration, responsiveness and driving enjoyment);
	Peak power output measured at 66kW at 5250rpm;
	Aluminium engine block and cylinder head (15kg weight saving compared with equivalent cast iron block);
	Ultra light camshafts: The camshafts are hollow tubes further contributing to the engine’s weight saving;

ECO Drive TECHNICAL ENHANCEMENTS

New Clio also comes with a range of efficient solutions designed to help drivers’ reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. To optimise fuel economy, ‘ECO’ mode can be activated at the push of a button reducing fuel consumption by up to10 per cent. This engine produces 66kW and 135Nm of torque at 5 250rpm. A Stop Start system with energy recovery under braking allows for a fuel consumption figure of 4.5-litres/100km and a CO2 emissions figure of just 105g/km.

Fuel consumption and efficiency features include:
	Dialled-in low running costs: careful tuning and new technologies to enable an optimised version with taller gear ratios for fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 105g/km, a saving of up to 21%.
	Stop Start Technology = zero emission, zero consumption when stationary + fast restart.
	Energy Smart Management (ESM): recovers the kinetic energy produced by the vehicle when decelerating / braking via the alternator and stores it in the battery. The electrical consumers (heating, lighting, radio, etc.) are then powered directly by the battery and have a low impact on fuel consumption. The stored energy is also used to restart the vehicle. (These two systems reduce CO2 per km emissions by 6 per cent on average.)
	Power Output: The 66kw Turbo’s power output matches the performance of a 1.4 litre 4-cylinder normally aspirated petrol engine and offers remarkable fuel efficiency, consumption and reduced CO2 emissions whilst affording outstanding quality and reliability.

THE RANGE: DRIVING PLEASURE, ON-BOARD COMFORT AND SOUND QUALITY

Renault’s New Clio line-up comes in three variants with the mid Expression and upper Dynamique models powered by the new 3-cylinder 66kW Turbo petrol engine:

•	the chic entry level 55kW Authentique 5-door

•	the upgraded 66kW Turbo Expression 5-door
•	and the top-of-the-range sporty 66kW Turbo Dynamique 5-door which boasts all the bells and whistles

Class-leading standard equipment across the trio includes:

	ABS
	Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
	ESP
	Hill Start Assist
	Cruise control / speed limiter
	Driver, passenger and side (head/chest-level) airbags
	On-board computer
	LED daytime running lights
	Electric defrosting wing mirrors
	Electric front windows
	Manual air conditioning (optional in Authentique; standard in Expression and Dynamique)
	Height-adjustable driver’s seat
	Height- and depth-adjustable steering wheel
	1/3 – 2/3 split-fold rear bench seat
	Renault Bass Reflex System
	Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming
	Hands-free telephony
	USB and AUX input Jack
	Emergency spare wheel

Representing the flagship of the New Clio range, the 66kW Turbo Dynamique defines sporting lifestyle with discerning taste. Tailored features include the Renault hands-free keycard, auto rain and light sensors and rear electric windows. Accessories are everything though, and the 66kW Dynamique makes a bold statement with 17” alloys, glossy black and chrome interior and exterior detailing, making it impossible to ignore. For those who wish to go one step further, optional extras include a fixed sunroof, automatic climate control and rear parking sensors.

SAFETY: A PRIORITY BEYOND PRICE
“As always with Renault, on-board safety is paramount – irrespective of pricing or class segment,” says Payzan. “From the entry level Clio 55kW Authentique and upgraded 66kW Turbo Expression to the top-of-the-range 66kW Turbo Dynamique, the on-board safety equipment and features are the same.”

Renault Clio was the first car in its class to obtain a four star, then a five star EuroNCAP rating.

ACTIVE SAFETY
For enhanced safety and driving pleasure, all New Clio engines incorporate Hill Start Assist connected to an ESP system which is standard across the range and represents a unique offering in the segment.

Additional active safety features include ASR traction control, ABS, EBD and EBA as well as electric variable-rate power steering and cruise control/speed limiter. New features are the ‘motorway-mode’ indicators which are an extremely practical feature that produce three flashes of the indicator when preparing to overtake by lightly moving the indicator stalk.

New Clio is an entirely keyless car. The key is replaced by an electronic card (depending on equipment level) which locks and unlocks the doors and permits the engine to be started without the driver removing the card from his or her pocket, bag or wallet for example.

PASSIVE SAFETY
People protection

In the event of a head-on impact, New Clio’s occupants are protected by four high-efficiency airbags – two front and two side airbags – as well as by seat belts equipped with pretensioners and load limiters. The rear seats are also equipped with an anti-submarining hump and three three-point seat belts with load limiter.

INDUSTRY LEADING WARRANTY

As is the case across Renault’s entire product range, the three New Clio variants come standard with a 5-year/150 000km mechanical warranty, a 3-year/45 000km service plan and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty.

The Toyota Corolla 2.0 D4D is a sleek looking car with its newly designed front grille, front bumper, headlamps, rear bumper and tail lights. It lends an air of sophistication to the car that was lacking before.Everything is colour coded so the finished article is very pretty.
The car is comfortable with leather seats and touch control steering wheel. The 6 gear transmission is very good considering a lot of six gear vehicles struggle with power in the sixth gear. This transmission has quite a power band between gears, and is seemingly more powerful than the 93KW that Toyota says it delivers.
The model I drove did not have Bluetooth so that was a little bit of a problem with calls, but it did have an USB port for music.Radio with 6 speakers.
The smart start touch button was enjoyable as the car automatically opens when you approach ,and only the drivers door ,so that is an excellent safety feature. The car is roomy inside and the boot is cavernous. The climate control system is very efficient and worked well in 32deg heat.It has cruise control and set at 120km gave a creditable 7.5L per 100km fuel consumption.
It has ABS braking as standard as well as driver and passenger front and side airbags.Anti-theft alarm and immobiliser system as well. Suspension is the MacPherson strut in front and the rear is the Torsion beam.
Top end in the car was around 200km an hour so not too shabby.
The vehicle retails for R246 000.00 as at March 2013.
Co2 emissions =135g/km

TOYOTA RAV4 – THE MATURE EVOLUTION .

Really enjoyed getting into the cockpit of the all new Rav 4 SUV in a drive down the scenic garden route from PE to George. The car looks much more masculine now and far less of the mommy wagon of the past. The car is very solid and has grunt in all four engine derivatives. If I had one gripe it would have been the lack of cruise control in all models except the 2.5 VX top of the range.Positives was definitely keen pricing which is going to make it an easy choice for many car buyers. This is good news for Toyota who pioneered this segment and now fends off multiple competitors.

Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing, is upbeat about the newcomer: “Now in its fourth iteration, Toyota has put its superior experience to good use in the all-new 2013 RAV4. It has evolved both stylistically and dynamically; not only does it sport dramatic lines and a more mature interior, but it also offers a more engaging driving experience i.e. it blends all the best bits from its predecessors and adds a pleasing quality twist to proceedings while retaining the original model’s commitment to fun.”

Design

•	Sophisticated, dynamic and bold exterior with signature Toyota design elements
•	Improved aerodynamic performance for greater handling stability, a reduction in wind noise and enhanced fuel efficiency

205mm longer than its predecessor (now without the spare wheel carrier on the tailgate) at 4,570mm overall, the fourth generation of Toyota’s compact, versatile SUV showcases an all-new silhouette that emphasises its versatility, roominess and sporting character.

The new model has a 25mm lower roofline than the third generation RAV4; it’s 30mm wider and boasts a significant 100mm increase in wheelbase length, yet still delivers a class-leading turning circle of only 10.6 metres, ensuring good manoeuvrability and ease to drive in urban traffic.

The all-new muscular exterior stylishly interprets the signature elements of the new Toyota frontal design language:
•	The stylish narrow grille central with chrome horizontal trim bar visually extending into the headlamp clusters;
•	The large trapezoidal lower opening below the grille finished in black resin, flanked by integral foglamp housings (foglamps standard on 2.2 & 2.5);
•	The now-familiar Keen Look (feline-eyed) headlamps incorporating LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) detailing.

In profile, the new RAV4 inherits the combination of space-efficient packaging, rising belt-line and distinctive silhouette that has hallmarked successive generations of Toyota’s compact SUV.

Above a more pronounced belt-line, blacked out B and C pillars emphasise the lengthened glasshouse and the vehicle’s interior roominess. ‘Below the belt’, the contrast of convex body surfacing and sharply concave treatment to the pronounced wheel arches and door sills provides added dynamism and strength to the new RAV4 silhouette.

To the rear, the cabin tapers strongly inwards, contrasting with the width of the lower body and creating muscular shoulders over the rear wheel arches to emphasise the vehicle’s, stable, planted stance.
Topped with an integral roof spoiler, the new tailgate itself is now top-hinged, and the rear gate mounted spare wheel has been removed to complete the new RAV4’s cleaner, more aerodynamically efficient design. In addition to the aesthetic advantages, the new design of the tailgate confers several other benefits including weight reduction and better space utilisation (the inner rear door is more concave in shape allowing for extra packing space).

The vehicle is equipped with a choice of 17” alloy wheels as standard and is available in a choice of 8 body colours, including four new hues in the model range: Greyish Blue Metallic, Eclipse Black Metallic, Crimson Metallic and Pearl White Metallic.

Improved Aerodynamic Performance

The new RAV4 has been styled using an ‘Air Management’ design approach for improved aerodynamics. This results in greater handling stability and enhanced fuel efficiency.

Front and rear aerocorners, and aerodynamically optimised wheel design and door mirrors minimise turbulence and stabilise airflow along the sides of the body. Based on advanced, Formula 1 technology, ‘Sakana’ fins located on the door mirror bases and rear combination lamps accelerate airflow along the body, enhancing vehicle stability and control.

The cabin has been tapered towards the rear, and the angles of the rear screen, roofline and its integral spoiler have been optimised to stabilise airflow over the upper body, further minimising turbulence and reducing drag.

Cabin quietness- and stability-enhancing air management measures to the underbody are equally comprehensive. They include front and rear wheel spats, an engine undercover, numerous floor undercovers, a fuel tank protector, rear suspension lower arm covers and a rear undercover.

Innovative, Higher Quality Interior Design

•	Elegant, ergonomic interior styling featuring high quality materials, soft padding and Clear Blue instrument back-lighting
•	Revised driving position for improved ergonomics, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience

The interior is where most drivers will find the bar significantly raised. Not only is the dash and center stack more modern and attractive to the touch, the interior cabin has more space.

The clean, sophisticated elegance of the new design is further strengthened by the use of high quality materials, soft padding in many areas of occupant contact, crisp trim finishes and new colours throughout.

The leading edge of the upper dashboard horizontal surface is trimmed with a metallic finish, whilst the lower surface takes the form of a sweeping, soft padded panel (leather on the VX), matched by identical treatment to the upper door panels.

Silver trim accents highlight the driver’s instruments, air vents, centre console instruments and gear lever, and both door switch panels and the transmission tunnel are finished with simulated carbon-fibre panels.

All instrument and switchgear back-lighting is now a Clear Blue colour; a crisp, cool after-dark illumination which brings visual consistency to the new interior.

Focused, Ergonomic Driving Position

In keeping with the more cockpit-like driver’s environment, the driving position of the new RAV4 has been extensively revised for improved ergonomics, greater comfort, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience.

The driver’s seat hip point has been lowered by 5mm and downward seat height adjustment range has been increased by 15mm to 30mm. The steering wheel angle has been lowered by 2.3 degrees, and reach adjustment towards the driver increased by up to 38mm.

Greater Space and Versatility

Though retaining the compact exterior dimensions essential to manoeuvrability, the new RAV4’s overall increase in length of 205mm.The front to rear seat couple distance has increased up to a best-in-class 970mm.
The length of the loadspace has increased to 1,025mm, raising luggage capacity to a class-leading 547 litres.

Powertrains

•	Widest and most efficient engine line-up yet for the new RAV4, averaging an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions across the range
•	Choice of front- or all-wheel drive, 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and CVT (Multidrive S) transmissions

The powertrain line-up now comprises a 107kW 2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engine in two-wheel drive format mated to a choice of 6-speed manual or Multidrive S (Toyota’s highly-advanced Continuously Variable Transmission system) transmissions; a 110kW 2.2 litre D-4D diesel engine teamed up with a six-speed manual and the all-wheel drive capabilities of Toyota’s AWD System; and a 132kW 2.5 litre VVT-i petrol unit married to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission and AWD. Every engine in this new line-up benefits from reductions in CO2 emissions, averaging some 11% across the range.

Engine	kW	WD	Trans.	CO2 (g/km)
2.0 Valvematic	107 / 6200	2WD	6MT	179
2.0 Valvematic	107 / 6200	2WD	Multidrive S	173
2.2 D-4D	110 / 3600	AWD	6MT	149
2.5 VVT-i	132 / 6000	AWD	6AT	198

TRANSMISSIONS

The new RAV4 offers customers a choice of 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and CVT transmissions.

6-speed Manual Transmissions

Two 6-speed manual transmissions are available – one for the 2.0 litre petrol engine, the other for the 2.2 litre D-4D diesel units. The latter is fitted with a triple cone synchroniser for 1st to 3rd gears, and a double cone synchroniser for 4th gear, reducing the shift force required to provide a smoother gear change.

6-speed Automatic Transmission

Available with the 2.5 litre petrol engine, the 6-speed Super ECT (Electronically Controlled Transaxle) automatic transmission is designed to combine high driving performance with low fuel consumption.

Combining steering wheel-mounted paddle shift override with Auto, Manual and Sport modes, the transmission features AI (Artificial Intelligence)-SHIFT Control, which automatically changes shift patterns in response to driving behaviour and road conditions.

CVT Transmission

Multidrive S is Toyota’s acclaimed Continuously Variable Transmission system as experienced on the new Verso. Delivering an infinite number of ratios through two cone-shaped pulleys and a high-strength steel belt, this new-age CVT system offers an incredibly smooth, seamless driving experience on the 2.0 petrol 2WD variant.

Because the transmission maintains the most efficient engine rpm at any given vehicle speed, it combines low cruising-speed noise with low CO2 emission and high fuel efficiency, yet can also maintain the ideal ratio to deliver peak engine power for maximum performance.

A ‘Sport’ button selects a more responsive, power-maximising ratio, delivering a more engaging driving experience. The transmission also features a sequential, manual 7-speed mode, with gear selection performed either by the gear shift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. With the gearshift lever in the ‘D’ position, drivers can also use the paddle shifts to temporarily override the automatic mode.

Driving Performance

•	Increased body rigidity for greater handling stability and improved steering response
•	Retuned front and rear suspension and revised Electric Power Steering for enhanced steering feel and precision
•	Integrated Dynamic Drive System – upgraded all-wheel drive system with Sport mode for enhanced on-road agility

Successive generations of RAV4 have established a reputation for their ride comfort, ease of driving, manoeuvrability and reassuring capabilities on challenging road surfaces. In conjunction with a new, more comfortable and focused driving position, the new RAV4 builds on these key attributes courtesy of retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised Electric Power Steering (EPS), and a newly developed Integrated Dynamic Drive System which is standard on all-wheel drive versions. In combination, these developments give the new RAV4 greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads, offering customers a confidence-inspiring, more intuitive and engaging driving experience.

The new RAV4 is also available with both Down-hill Assist and Hill Start Assist Control. Fitted as standard on the 2.5 VX model, Down-hill Assist Control automatically regulates gear selection, engine speed and the individual wheel braking capabilities of the ABS system to help the driver maintain a constant speed during both on- and off-road descents.

Retuned Front and Rear Suspension Systems

The new RAV4 shares the MacPherson strut front and lightweight trailing arm double wishbone rear suspension of its predecessor. However, both systems have been revised to optimise ride comfort whilst enhancing steering feel.

Integrated Dynamic Drive System

The new RAV4 is available with either front-wheel drive (2.0) or the Integrated Dynamic Drive System (2.2 & 2.5), an upgraded version of Toyota’s advanced all-wheel drive technology featuring a new Sport mode.

In normal mode -when neither Sport mode nor Lock mode are activated- torque transfer to the rear wheels now takes place not only when the front wheels are beginning to slip on slippery surfaces (as in the third generation RAV4) but also when the system detects understeer during cornering on road. As a result, the overall agility and driving performance of the vehicle is enhanced during both on- and off-road driving.

When the new Sport mode is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels begins even before understeer develops. From the moment the steering wheel is turned, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD System operates a newly developed pre-torque control, automatically introducing a 90:10 front/rear torque distribution to help cornering force by transferring traction torque to rear. If actual understeer develops, torque transfer to the rear wheels is automatically increased by up to 50% through a new yaw rate feedback control, to provide front tyres with improved lateral grip.

For off-road driving, the system incorporates an AWD Lock button. This allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio at speeds up to 40km/h. Above this speed, the system automatically reverts to Normal mode.

Comfort
Low NVH measures

The new RAV4 incorporates a substantial range of measures to suppress the transmission of noise and vibration into the cabin, resulting in increased quietness for all occupants. Under a new engine bay barrier design concept, extensive improvements have been made to the sound proofing qualities of the dashboard, dashboard inner and outer silencers, the cowl insulator and the bonnet insulator, reducing the transmission of engine noise to the cabin.

Noise has been reduced by the adoption of an acoustic windscreen which features an additional layer of acoustic film to reduce noise transmission. The aerodynamic shaping of the door mirrors further reduces wind noise.

Two Trim Levels

The new RAV4’s trim levels (GX and VX) offer a generous sliding scale of kit. GX models are anything but spartan thanks to exterior features such as standard roof rails, 17” alloys, and Daytime Running Lights (DRL). The only external differentiator between the 2.0-litre models and the 2.2 D-4D is the addition of integrated foglamps for the latter. Step up to the flagship VX and you gain a chrome insert in the front bumper, front and rear mud flaps, power retractable side mirrors, a moon roof with tilt and slide function, and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with cleaning system.

Move indoors and the high spec count continues. Standard fare on offer on the GX models includes power windows, remote central locking, manual climate control, touch-screen Multi Information Display incorporating a stereo system, steering controls, retractable tonneau cover with net barrier and rear Park Distance Control (PDC) to name just a few of the features.

The VX grade tops up with full leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, front seat heaters, automatic dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera display, a powered tailgate with memory function, cruise control and a keyless entry system (Smart Entry).

Safety

The new RAV4 builds on the high standards of occupant safety and pedestrian impact protection evolved over three generations of the compact Toyota SUV, with even higher levels of active and passive safety. With an impact absorbing, multi-load-path body construction designed to help provide occupant protection, the new RAV4 has been engineered to achieve a 5-Star rating in the 2013 Euro NCAP crash test programme.

The new Toyota SUV is equipped with a new, whiplash injury reducing seat design, and seven airbags are fitted as standard, including a driver’s knee airbag and twin-chamber front seat side airbags.

Active safety systems include ABS with EBD, BA, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and TRC (Traction Control), and all-wheel drive models are equipped, as standard, with VSC+, which integrates VSC and the vehicle’s Electric Power Steering (EPS)
