The halfway point of 2011 Sport Compact was passed with Round 3 once again taking place at Tarlton International Raceway. The list of competitors was down on previous events but that favoured all who took part as the lines were short and drivers could fit in a few extra qualifying runs. Racing began at around 10:00am as the field warmed up bottles of nitrous and checked tyres pressures before putting in the first run of the day.
A few notable absentees slightly detracted from the racing: Richard Jordaan and Duppie Du Plessis in the Nissan Champs, Quintin in the normally aspirated K20 Honda Civic and a few from the SnS camp. That said the field was still diverse with the usual consignment of hot hatches to fully prepared drag racers and exhibition cars.
At the last event there were 27 breakages but this time Tarlton was more sympathetic as only ten cars retired by the time eliminations took place. George Smooth in his BMW 335i battled with traction and was unable to use the extra grunt from his newly-fitted nitrous system with a time of 12.5 seconds while Vishal Matai in the VW Golf GTi was another member of the 12.5-second club.
Satish in the SnS Opel broke sideshafts early on but he had the car fixed and running in no time – his car is making more power but brittle sideshafts meant he had to launch cautiously and his times suffered. It was business as usual for the other SnS Opel of Theo Knipe as he ran consistently with a best time of 10.3. It won’t be long before he is in the nines.
With the introduction of V8 engines came some meticulous race cars running competitive times. Wouter Havenga ran a 10.90 in the normally aspirated Chev Escort and went on to win his class. It was also good to see Michelle Taylor getting the best out of her car with a time of 12.3 seconds.
Budler Motorsport in their turbo BMW ran a personal best of 8.2-seconds while Eziel Esterhuysen in the Honda Civic managed to punch his Honda to the line in under 10 seconds. Doing it for the rotaries was Arthur from AJ Racing as he joined the sub 10-second gang with a blistering time of 9.8 seconds.
Round 3 also marked the debut of Ian Repsold’s highly-anticipated MethAddict dragster competing in Outlaw class. He got the time down to an 8.8-second showing enormous potential for the rounds to come.
When it came down to the crunch of Eliminations it was Divan Prinsloo ahead of Jose Patrico in True Street while Hannes Straus beat Dennis V Loggenberg with a 12.0 in Wild Street. For Pro Street Wouter Havenga got the better of Leon du Plooy and Wessel Oosthuizen beat Tyrin Murray in Outlaw.
The next round of Sport Compact will take place on the 4th of September at Tarlton.
